Jessica Ozalp is a member of Axleys Litigation and Labor & Employment Practice
Groups. She works on a wide range of issues for clients, and particularly enjoys
defending health care providers, defending schools and helping organizations that
employ international workers to stay in compliance with immigration regulations.
With audits and enforcement actions increasing, she says, clients must be vigilant about maintaining current and accurate files.
Ms. Ozalp is uniquely qualified to advise clients on immigration matters. She is intimately familiar with the immigration process,
which she went through when her husband became a U.S. citizen, and she worked for several years teaching English and academic
writing to international university students and visiting scholars prior to attending law school.
A native of South Carolina, Ms. Ozalp speaks fluent Spanish and Turkish and initially aspired to be a language teacher. It wasnt until
she landed in Madison and by chance found herself in a fascinating conversation with a UW law professor the first lawyer she had
ever met that she contemplated practicing law.
In law school, Ms. Ozalp was a top student and a Wisconsin Idea Scholar. She served as a managing editor for the Wisconsin Law
Review and chaired the publications Diversity Committee.
Ms. Ozalps professional experience includes a position in the chambers of Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Ann Walsh Bradley,
where she had an opportunity to immerse herself in a spectrum of legal issues. She also worked at the Wisconsin Department of
Justice and at the state Legislative Reference Bureau, where she got an insiders perspective on how bills become law.
Her understanding of the complexities involved in creating and amending laws means Ms. Ozalp is regularly tapped to write
articles for professional law journals on topics as wide ranging as products liability, bicycle accidents, changes in employment law
and Wisconsins recent concealed carry legislation.
When she is not working, Ms. Ozalp is an avid cyclist and triathlete. She competed in seven triathlons and a half marathon, and took
second in her age group at a 50-mile bike race last August. She currently is training for the 90-mile Race the Lake bike race. She
and her husband and daughter live in the Madison area.
