Personal Injury: Do I Need a Lawyer?
To the family facing a sudden injury, the most immediate legal decision is whether to discuss the accident with an insurance company or a lawyer first. Twenty years ago this decision was less significant, but legal and insurance practices have changed greatly since then.

You should discuss your case with an attorney before speaking with an insurance company if you or a family member suffered a serious injury. To assist you, Axley Brynelson's personal injury lawyers offer a free consultation without obligation and a contingent fee agreement.

Do you need a lawyer? If you answer "yes" to two or more of the following questions, you should definitely retain an experienced personal injury attorney.

Does your injury involve:
  • A fracture?
  • An injury to a nerve?
  • An injury to the spine?
  • Chronic pain or pain lasting for more than 12 months?
  • Required surgery?
  • Internal injuries?
  • Injury to a weight bearing joint?
  • Injury to the head, including headaches, memory loss, problems of cognition, depression, etc.?
  • Pain radiating into the arms, legs, pelvis or buttocks?
  • Prescription pain medication extending beyond three to four weeks?

Additionally:
  • Is future surgery(s) likely?
  • Has the injury caused a loss of wages?
  • Will the injury likely result in a future wage loss?
  • Do medical and hospital expenses exceed $10,000?
  • Is rehabilitation therapy continuing?
  • Does the injury affect your ability to do your job, either now or in the future?

While no simple formula for evaluating the dollar value for full compensation exists, for injuries such as those above, your case is best handled by a lawyer who has experience with and is devoted to protecting injured people.
