What’s the difference between custody and placement?
Custody refers to the legal authority to make major decisions for a child, such as medical care and education. Placement refers to where the child physically resides and the time they spend with each parent. Both can be shared or awarded primarily to one parent.
Can custody and placement orders be changed later?
Yes. If there’s been a significant change in circumstances — such as a new job, relocation, or concerns about a child’s welfare — either parent can petition the court to modify an existing order.
What if one parent wants to move away with the child?
Wisconsin law requires that a parent provide formal notice if they plan to relocate more than 100 miles from the other parent. The court may hold a hearing to determine whether the move is in the child’s best interest.
