Attorney D. Clarke Sugar is a partner at Axley and a member of the firm’s Business Practice Group. His practice focuses on a wide range of business and transactional matters including insolvency proceedings; secured and commercial transactions; mergers and acquisitions; due diligence and regulatory compliance; and commercial real estate transactions.
Before joining Axley, Attorney Sugar was an associate at Meyers Law Group, P.C. in downtown San Francisco, where he represented debtors, creditors and trustees in a variety of bankruptcy related proceedings, including reorganizations involving commercial developers, agricultural producers, automotive dealerships, restaurant franchisors and technology companies. He also represented a trustee in pursuing multimillion dollar crop reinsurance claims against governmental agencies through ascending levels of administrative and judicial review.
Attorney Sugar received his Juris Doctor along with a concentration in Commercial Law from Hamline University – School of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota. While at Hamline, he completed the International Negotiations and Comparative Law Summer Program in Bergen and Oslo, Norway. Additionally, Attorney Sugar served as an intern to the Honorable Nancy C. Dreher of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Minnesota, where he participated in the researching, editing and updating of the prominent Bankruptcy Law Manual treatise for publication. In recognition for his work and academic achievement, he was awarded the Distinguished Law Student for the Eighth Circuit Award by the American College of Bankruptcy.
Attorney Sugar received his undergraduate degree in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. While attending the University of Wisconsin, Mr. he also served as an instructor for Hoofer Sailing Club, teaching a variety of both youth and adult sailing and windsurfing classes.
Admitted to practice in the State Courts of Wisconsin, California, and Minnesota and Federal Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Wisconsin, for the Eastern, Central, Northern, and Southern Districts of California.
