Summer Associate Program

Axley provides law students the opportunity to gain hands on legal experience through the firm’s summer law clerk program. Our summer law clerks get a true understanding of Axley and the legal industry by working with our 50 plus Wisconsin attorneys on real assignments for real clients in over 100 legal areas.

Axley’s summer law clerks:

  • Shadow attorneys at court trials, depositions and mediations
  • Learn about the business and marketing aspects of law practice, such as obtaining and retaining clients
  • Interact with clients and potential clients at company and community networking events
  • Draft memos, briefs and pleadings
  • Collaborate with attorneys to write articles and legal alerts, and prepare presentations
  • Participate in client and firm practice group meetings
  • Attend legal trainings and CLEs

Our summer law clerk program is our primary source of new associate hires. We principally recruit second year law students.

Description: Named the #1 Law Firm by In Business Magazine seven years in a row, Axley is an equal opportunity employer that is seeking a paralegal with a minimum of three years of municipal and/or litigation experience. Job duties include the following:

  • Manage prosecution files for four municipal courts by conducting initial intake, gathering and reviewing law enforcement reports and media files, drafting subpoenas, coordinating witnesses, and preparing exhibits and examination outlines for trial.
  • Conduct initial review of claims against municipalities; investigate the facts and legal exposure related to same.
  • Assist with real estate acquisitions and sales by preparing purchase/sale agreements, reviewing title history reports, drafting conveyance instruments, and facilitating closing of transactions.
  • Prepare initial drafts of term sheets and development agreements between municipalities and developers.
  • Regularly conduct legal research as specific issues arise with municipal clients.
  • Regularly prepare resolutions and ordinances as requested by municipalities.
  • Follow legislative bills and assist with drafting amended municipal codes of ordinances pursuant to enacted law which directly affects municipalities.
  • Independently interact and correspond daily with local elected official and municipal department heads in order to effectively handle any and all of the above.

Qualifications: Post‐Secondary coursework in paralegal studies or equivalent experience as a paralegal, legal assistant or similar position, preferably an Associate’s Degree or higher. Minimum of three years of litigation experience.
