Summer Associate Program
Axley provides law students the opportunity to gain hands on legal experience through the firm’s summer law clerk program. Our summer law clerks get a true understanding of Axley and the legal industry by working with our 50 plus Wisconsin attorneys on real assignments for real clients in over 100 legal areas.
Axley’s summer law clerks:
- Shadow attorneys at court trials, depositions and mediations
- Learn about the business and marketing aspects of law practice, such as obtaining and retaining clients
- Interact with clients and potential clients at company and community networking events
- Draft memos, briefs and pleadings
- Collaborate with attorneys to write articles and legal alerts, and prepare presentations
- Participate in client and firm practice group meetings
- Attend legal trainings and CLEs
Our summer law clerk program is our primary source of new associate hires. We principally recruit second year law students.

The individual hired for this position will be responsible for running conflicts searches, opening new client files, preparing engagement agreements, and handling billing. Additional job duties include the following:
- Draft correspondence and other court documents
- Review, edit and proofread correspondence and pleadings for proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting
- File pleadings with circuit courts, appellate courts, federal district courts, and state agencies
- Confer with clients and other involved parties to gather and track case information
- Draft discovery responses in preparation for response
- Calendar court-ordered deadlines
- Work with process server to arrange for service of Summons and Complaints and other legal documents
- Maintain litigation files and calendars, noting deadlines for responsive pleadings, motions and other important deadlines
- Work alongside attorneys, paralegals and fellow legal assistants on complex cases and legal processes, including managing class action and multidistrict litigation
- Prepare and track medical/billing record requests
Qualifications: Post‐Secondary coursework in paralegal studies or equivalent experience as a paralegal, legal assistant or similar position, preferably an Associate’s Degree or higher.

This is a full-time position with a 40-hour work week from Monday through Friday. The individual hired for this position will be responsible for running conflicts searches, opening new client files, preparing engagement agreements, and handling billing. Additional job duties include the following:
- Direct support with lawyers in estate planning/probate and business
- Direct contact with clients and outside vendors
- Prepare draft estate planning documents (insert information into template documents)
- Exposure to and preparation of federal estate tax, personal, and fiduciary income tax returns
- Apply for FEINs with IRS
- Preparation of real estate transfer returns
- Preparation of warranty and quit claim deeds
- eRecord appropriate real estate and other various documents
- Prepare completed estate planning binders and mailings
- Organize appointments, contacts, emails, assignments, and deadlines
- Establish and follow deadlines for assignments
- Track open files and work needed by the attorney on files
Qualifications: Post‐Secondary coursework in paralegal studies or equivalent experience as a paralegal, legal assistant or similar position, preferably an Associate’s Degree or higher.
This person must take initiative, be intuitive, be able to multi-task, adapt to changes, take pride in their work, and be reliable in attendance as well as being a team player. The ideal candidate will also suggest procedures to make tasks easier, have a desire to learn, develop, and refine skills for growth.
- Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel,
- Familiarity with document managing systems and electronic calendar/docket systems
- Understanding of the various county court systems – Local Rules
- Exceptional grammar, spelling, and proofreading skills
