(Madison, Wis.) – Attorney Saul Glazer was recently appointed to The Independent Living Board of Directors after working with the organization for a number of years on various construction-related projects.
“It is truly an honor to be able to serve on Independent Living’s Board,” Saul remarked. “Rita Giovannoni and her team give their hearts and souls every day to help enrich the lives of the elderly throughout the Madison Community. I look forward to contributing my talents towards their goal of helping elderly people remain independent as long as possible, and providing a safe, rewarding and healthy environment for those who need assisted living and nursing care.”
“My mother, Helen Glazer, spent her career dedicated to helping older people,” Saul continued. “She was an activities director for a Bethesda, Maryland nursing home and a pioneer in shattering the notion that nursing homes had to be dreary. Instead, she constantly set up programs and field trips to allow older people to remain active in the community. In fact, my mom is probably the only person to ever write a book on the positive aspects of nursing home life. She recognized that older people are our national treasures who are the purveyors of wisdom and history. She took the time to know and learn about all the residents, such as Alice Koppel, Ted Koppel’s mom. Ted was devoted to his mother, and my mom rode with Ted in the limo for his mom’s funeral. My mother also met Shirley MacLaine’s and Warren Beatty’s mom during an outing she put together for residents in Virginia. Thankfully, it didn’t lead to my mother divorcing my dad and running off with Warren.”
Independent Living, Inc., serves adults in many ways. Its Evening Meals on Wheels Program serves approximately 180 evening meals to seniors in Dane County. In 2012 alone, it served almost 39,000 meals, delivered by an amazing corps of 250 volunteers. Another program, Independent Health Care, helps seniors and adults with disabilities recover at home with skilled home health services that include nursing care and physical therapy.
