Attorney Christopher M. Toner is a partner and member of the Firm’s Labor and Employment Practice Group. As a former in-house attorney at large health care systems, Attorney Toner is well positioned to assist clients with navigating and resolving complex legal matters as well as assisting with legal guidance on their day to day legal needs. His experience as in-house counsel allows him to understand the operational complexities and provide practical solutions. Attorney Toner handles legal and regulatory issues facing health systems, including areas such as employment law counseling, collective bargaining with labor unions, peer review matters and medical staff issues, and revisions to medical staff bylaws. In addition, Attorney Toner has experience assisting Corporate Compliance teams, and provides counsel in matters involving issues related to Stark, Anti-Kickback and tax-exempt regulations, HIPAA, EMTALA, and licensing issues.
In addition to his healthcare practice, Attorney Toner has two decades of experience in representing employers in all areas of labor and employment. As a member of an HR team, he is a leader in providing practical advice to ensure compliance in all areas of the labor and employment law, including the National Labor Relations Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, Family Medical Leave Act, and federal and state discrimination laws.
Attorney Toner frequently speaks on labor and employment and healthcare related issues relevant to HR teams, manager groups, and executives on issues intended to avoid conflict and litigation.
He also takes great pride in volunteering in his community. He is past President of Marathon County Youth Hockey Association, legal counsel to Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association (WAHA), legal counsel to Samoset Council Boy Scouts of America, and past President of the Wausau School Foundation. He coaches youth hockey and baseball, and is a fly fisherman, trap shooter, and optimistic yet persistently mediocre golfer.
